Our journey began with a short flight from Charlotte and a long layover in Boston. Unfortunately we weren't able to see a whole lot of Boston, but we did get to see a sunset over the city from the outskirts of town.
We arrived in Reykjavík at about 6 am Iceland time, or 1 am our time. The jet lag was real. Thankfully we were able to pull over and take a nap before the next leg of our journey to Dalabyggð, which is north of where we started.
Our first couple of nights were spent at a bed and breakfast called Drangar. This was one of the more remote places that we visited. Drangar used to be a dairy farm that was recently renovated to be made into a lodge with several rooms.
After our first night, we explored Snæfellsnes peninsula. This place was a treasure trove of sweeping views of all sorts.
We spent our third icelandic evening at a hotel right across from the geysers, aptly named hotel Geysir. We were so happy to get to see the northern lights yet again at this location!
The third place we stayed was in a no-frills spare bedroom at a farmhouse. I wondered what this farm does with all of the horses that they raise, and I asked. The owner, Valborg, told me that they raise the horses for meat. The meat isn't commonly eaten in Iceland, but exported to other European countries.
Our fourth accommodation was an airbnb apartment in the downstairs of an Icelandic farmhouse (the white building).
The small white building in the front of this image was where we spent our next to last evening. It was a storage shed turned tiny house right next to the famous Reynisfjara Beach (near Vik). We slept in bunk beds here. Though it was tight quarters, it was certainly a cozy reprieve from the chilling winds that came from the beach. The owner of this little house (Ragnar) was very friendly, and actually grew up farming this very land. It was a little sad to hear of what the beach used to be, and then to consider what it has become- a high- traffic instagram influencer destination. It was still amazing to behold the natural basalt columns rising up from the black sand, but I couldn't help but imagine little Ragnar running around on the remote beach as a child, capturing puffins on the edge of the cliffs. Makes me think of this music video.
Reykjavík was a cool city. Home of one of the top three cinnamon rolls I have ever had (Braud Bakery)
